Key Responsibilities. This position will manage all phases of consulting projects, from proposal development and scoping to execution, delivery, and client closeout. This requires:
- Project Management: Able to handle multiple projects and deadlines under limited supervision.
- Code & Regulatory Expertise: Analyze, interpret, and advise clients on best practices for implementing and enforcing city tree codes, regulations, and associated processes.
- Operational Consulting: Provide expert guidance on the practical aspects of municipal urban forestry, including reviewing and improving daily operations (e.g., pruning cycles, tree removals, storm response), aiding in budget development, improvement communications, and integrating tree programs with other municipal departments (e.g., Planning, Engineering, Public Works).
- Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitate effective communication and consensus-building with municipal staff, elected officials, external stakeholders, and the public.
- Business Development: This position also includes consistently identifying and researching potential clients, preparing proposals and assisting with RFP responses, and developing and maintaining client relationships.
Required Qualifications
- Direct Municipal Experience: Ideal candidate would have at minimum 5-10 years of direct, hands-on experience working for a city or county in a supervisory or senior role within an urban forestry, parks, planning or public works department. Ideal candidates will have past experience in more than one city, as this provides more perspective on how municipal management and regulations vary.
- Certifications: ISA Certified Arborist (required); TRAQ is preferred but can be obtained later on.
- Core Competencies: Proven experience in:
- Developing regulations, ordinances and technical specifications.
- Managing municipal contracts, budgets, and staff.
- Familiarity with GIS and urban forest inventory management systems.
- Excellent oral and written communications, networking and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with civil and landscape architecture plans, details, and specifications as they relate to conflicts with trees and environmental regulatory compliance.
