Colerain Township, Ohio

Consulting Arborist Services for Colerain Township

When the Northbrook and Groesbeck neighborhoods of Colerain Township were developed, they were designed with street trees in mind, building in large tree lawns (area between the sidewalk and the street) to provide room for large mature trees to shade the neighborhoods.  This was forward thinking at the time, and is still considered such today.  Trees are one of the primary tools to keeping heat levels low and removing pollutants from the air, which combined have a significant impact on public health.  Additionally, trees are an important tool for absorbing excess stormwater and reducing flooding, which is critical in the Cincinnati region.

Based on the call for more trees in the 2019 Northbrook Now Reinvestment Plan, UCW was brought in to build an inventory of both existing trees and potential planting locations in the Northbrook neighborhood, as well as Groesbeck area.  This work showed that despite full tree canopy cover in the 1960s and 1970s, there are very few street trees left due to the combination of ongoing losses from removals and natural mortality, together with a lack of replanting efforts.

Since the inventory, UCW has aided the Colerain Township in rebuilding an urban forestry program, including making recommendations for public policy and code related to trees, training public works staff on tree care, and managing street tree planting contracts in Colerain.
